Applying for college is one of the most important and stressful experiences in an 18 year old’s life. The

past four years of school have been preparing you for college.

College is the path to a better future, it is the gateway to the 9-to-5, no summer vacation world of an

All this may sound great and college is an exciting time, but you have to make it past the complicated

and grueling application process.

The first step in the application process to decide what colleges you are interested in.

Most of the time you will want to go to the college your parents or your friends want to go to.

This is not the right way to go about it, you need to go out and research colleges that you are

interested in not what you think is cool.

Next, you need to attend as many informational meetings as you can for the schools interest you. Also

take a look at your grades and realistically think about which schools you have a chance of getting

It is a good thing to have a couple reach schools, ones that you might get into, match schools, ones

that you have a good chance of getting into, and safety schools which are schools that you are sure

you will get into. A meeting with a counselor is always good so that they can tell you what you need to

do before you start the application process.

Next comes the college essay process, they need to be well-written and grammatically correct. College

essays are about a page long and many colleges have different essays. Along with your essays you

need to gather recommendations from your te achers and counselor.

Recommendations from teachers that know you well are important for college applications.

Next, building a resume is a good idea. A resume allows a college to see what you have accomplished

and done in your life. Certain attributes or activities on your resume may attract the attention of the

various colleges you are applying to.

Once you have all these parts you can start filling out your application for the schools you would

actually go to. These applications can take days to fill out so make sure you start early so you do not

have to race to submit an application.

When submitting these applications be aware of the deadlines for early decision and when the final

day for submitting an application is.

Another part of the application process is applying for housing. If you choose to attend a college

where campus dorms fill up quickly, apply for housing around the same time you submit your

application. Once you submit your application it is all up to the college whether you get in or not.

Focus on finishing strong senior year and prepare yourself for what is to come.

College is one of the most exciting times in life. Submit an application that reflects who you really are

academically and as a person you will find a college that is right for you.
