Normally, baseball players are behind home plate swinging for the fences.

Yesterday, five Eagle ballplayers got behind a different plate to see whether Whataburger’s new Buffalo Ranch Chicken Strip Sandwich is a hit, coinciding with the September 28 release of the hailed restaurant’s newest sandwich.

KHOU 11 aired a taste testing with the help of seniors Matthew Ashbaugh, Nolan Lundholm, Alex Carnegie, Shane Podsednik and Eric Moore.

These lucky ones not only got to taste the brand new sandwich early but also did so on live television. “The sandwich was good but pretty spicy,” Podsednik said. Head baseball coach Ryan Lousteau and Director of Communications Keith Calkins — who previously worked as sports director for FOX 26 in Houston — were the ones responsible for getting these players five minutes of face time with the new sandwich. “It was a great experience with my fellow teammates,” Podsednik said. The sandwich came out at 3 pm and the segment aired at 4:30 on KHOU channel 11 in Houston.
