In a heartwarming display of generosity, Johnny C. Carrabba ‘77, founder and owner of Carrabba’s Italian Grill, donated $25,000 to this year’s Round-Up fundraiser at St. Thomas. This significant contribution comes alongside dozens of smaller donations aimed at reaching the ambitious goal of one million dollars, a target set to surpass previous fundraising records.
The announcement was made during a pep rally held two Fridays ago, where Carrabba served as a guest speaker. He shared his personal journey and the profound impact St. Thomas has had on his life. Carrabba emphasized the importance of giving back to the community that supports you.
“He’s been giving back to us for years now, but a donation like this is once in a lifetime. We are so grateful for him and his contributions here at St. Thomas,” Kenny Martin said.
In a surprising moment for the audience, including the Round-Up executive board, Carrabba revealed his donation by handing a check to Jonathan King, a student representative. The room erupted in shock and excitement, underscoring the magnitude of Carrabba’s generosity.
“I didn’t even know he was going to give me all of that money, but it’s a weird feeling taking a $25,000 check from someone. I’m so grateful for him,” Jonathan King ’25 said.
Carrabba’s legacy extends beyond his restaurant success; he is a founding board member of the Upper Kirby District and is recognized as a pioneer of the gentrification of Upper Kirby. His contributions to the community have earned him a place in the Hall of Honor at St. Thomas.
As the Round-Up fundraiser progresses, the excitement around Carrabba’s donation serves as a catalyst for other potential donors. With the community rallying behind this initiative, the hope is to not only meet but exceed the one million dollar mark, creating lasting benefits for students at St. Thomas.
This year’s Round-Up fundraiser is not just about raising funds; it’s about building a legacy of support and encouragement for future generations. Carrabba’s inspiring commitment is a reminder of the profound impact one individual can have on a community, igniting a spirit of generosity that is sure to resonate throughout the years.
