Astroworld. My planet, my home.

Astroworld. My planet, my home.

On August 3, 2018, Travis Scott dropped his third studio album, Astroworld. The Houston native announced the making of an album called Astroworld in May 2016, and over two years later, Travis Scott fans finally got what they were waiting for. Fans were told the initial release would be in 2017. The album’s name is derived from the amusement park Six Flags AstroWorld, which was open from 1968 to 2005 in Houston across the freeway from NRG Stadium. The album cover has two different versions of cover art with the original and the “Night” version.

The album consists of 17 songs of which the song “Butterfly Effect” was released in May of 2017 and made it onto the US Billboard Hot 100. The song was released a year before the album and somehow slipped its way into Astroworld. “Sicko Mode” hit the charts as the second single from the album. The song features rappers: Drake, Swae Lee, Uncle Luke, Big Hawk, Sheck Wes, and The Notorious B.I.G. “Sicko Mode” made tributes to late rappers Big Hawk and The Notorious B.I.G. by using some of clips of their voices from their previous songs. Travis Scott also released the song “Watch” featuring Kanye West and Lil Uzi Vert on May 4, 2018, which did not make it into the album even though the song’s cover art was Astroworld. On August 10, 2018, Astroworld was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Travis Scott released new Astroworld merchandise on his website every day after the album was released. The selected merchandise was only up for one day and then new merchandise would be released the day after that. The merchandise consisted of shirt, jackets, hoodies, pants, hats, and collectibles inspired by the album. The merchandise would have a timer for how long it would be available on the website. Each purchase would come with a free digital download of the album. Fans thought they would only have the one day to buy the merchandise, but on the last day that merchandise was available, Travis Scott put all of the albums merchandise up on his website. The only fall back of the merchandise is how long it took to be shipped. Fans did not get their merchandise for up to a month after order.

Travis Scott released his Astroworld tour dates on August 16, 2018. Each concert will be played in the cities on the list, but in Houston, Travis Scott announced that on November 17 there will be a festival for the new album. The festival will feature special guests such as Sheck Wes, Gunna, Trippie Redd, and “Virgil” Abloh, and it is called Astroworld Festival. Fans are still hoping for special guests that were in the album to come to the festival such as Drake. The festival will be at NRG park with the general attendance ticket costing $99. Tickets can be purchased at astroworldfest.com. The tour will make its way through different cities across the country, but the festival will only be in Houston.
