Off-season grades for Marquee NBA Teams

Atlanta Hawks

Key additions: Trae Young (Draft), Vince Carter, Jeremy Lin

Key subtractions: Dennis Schroder

After a poor 2017-2018 campaign for the Hawks, they landed the 5th overall pick in the draft and selected Trae Young. With the addition of Young it adds a new hope for Atlanta. Young alongside the 20th overall pick in the 2017 draft, John Collins, The Hawks think they have found their foundation for the next decade. But with the addition of a new franchise changing point comes the departure of Dennis Schroder, their previous point guard. The Hawks will look to steadily improve and take the 2018-2019 season as a year to improve.

Off-season grade: B-

Boston Celtics

Key additions: Robert Williams (draft), Gordon Hayward (injury)

With a season ending injury in the first game for their newly signed free agent Gordon Hayward in 2017, the team still managed to make it to the Eastern Conference Finals. The Celtics might’ve been the second most talented team in the NBA last season, they have kept their core players from last season and added an athletic big man to back up their center from the draft. With Gordon Hayward coming back, they are the favorite to come out of the East and challenge the Warriors.

Off-season Grade: A-

Chicago Bulls

Key additions: Jabari Parker, Wendell Carter Jr.(draft

The Bulls are going big this season. With the additions of standout freshman from Duke, Wendell Carter Jr., and Jabari Parker, they are ready to take the east by storm alongside Zach Lavine and last year’s draft pick Lauri Markkanen. With no major subtractions the Bulls can only go up with all of the young talent this season.

Off-season Grade: B+

Cleveland Cavaliers

Key additions: Collin Sexton(draft)

Key subtraction: Lebron James, Jeff Green

The big story in Cleveland is replacing Lebron and starting a new era in Cleveland. With the addition of their hopeful future point guard of the future and retaining Kevin Love. They will look to be a bottom half play-off team, but with Lebron leaving it will be a struggle for them to return to the top of the East.

Off-season Grade: C+

Golden State Warriors

Key additons: Demarcus Cousins, Jonas Jerebko

Key subtractions: JaVale McGee

The unquestioned powerhouse in the NBA for the foreseeable future just signed another all star in Demarcus Cousins. This makes the Warriors the first team to start 5 all stars since the 1960’s Celtics team. Losing JaVale McGee gives up some depth and rim protection but with the addition of Cousins it will be made up. With resigning Kevin Durant they are a scary lineup for the upcoming season and will look to make it three championships in a row.

Off-season Grade: A

Houston Rockets

Key Additions: Carmelo Anthony, Michael Carter-Williams, Marquese Chriss, James Ennis III, Brandon Knight, Vincent Edwrads

Key subtractions: Trevor Ariza, Luc Mbah a Moute

The rich get richer in Houston, at least offensively. With the signing of an all-star veteran like Carmelo Anthony, the Rockets added immediate offense along with lots of young depth at the wing position and finally a backup for aging Chris Paul. The loss of Trevor Ariza hurts the defense evidently but scoring more points than the other team wins games so the Rockets are going all offense. With a lot of firepower the Rockets will try to challenge the defending champs Golden State Warriors.

Off-season Grade: A

Los Angeles Lakers

Key additions: Lebron James, MIchael Beasley, JaVale McGee, Rajon Rondo, Lance Stephenson

Key Subtractions:Isaiah Thomas, Brook Lopez

Lebron James signed with the Lakers this offseason which turns the whole franchise upside down, immediately into championship contention. This move was has been coming for year since Lebron has struggled to take down the Warriors. They will look to challenge the Warriors and Rockets with their new play-making and three point shooting along with Lebron.

Off-season Grade: A+

New Orleans Pelicans

Key additions: Jahlil Okafor, Elfrid Payton, Julius Randle, Tony Carr

Key subtractions: Demarcus Cousins, Rajon Rondo

The loss of Demarcus Cousins in theory does not really hurt the Pelicans because they actually played better when he was out. With the addition of front court depth in Jahlil Okafor and Julius Randle spacing might be a problem for Anthony Davis and the Pelicans, but they will be a front court to be reckoned with. The Pelicans will look to make a deeper push in the playoffs this year after sweeping the three seed in the first round.

Off-season Grade: C+

Toronto Raptors

Key Additions: Kawhi Leonard, Danny Green

Key Subtractions: DeMar DeRozan

The Raptors added an all-star and lost an all-star. The front office thought that their team needed to shake things up after losing to Lebron James and the Cavaliers in the playoffs for three straight years. They are risking signing Kawhi Leonard for one year and losing their cornerstone player in DeMar DeRozan. Kawhi Leonard has said publicly that he wants to go to Los Angeles so after this year he might leave to the west coast and leave the Raptors with no superstar.
