Independent Work Days allow students to work at their own pace, as well as giving students a much needed break. For many students, balancing the workload of Saint Thomas as well as the demands from extracurricular activities is tiring; therefore, independent work days should remain a consistent staple in the week.

Independent Work Days, when properly utilized may serve as a catalyst for better grades and mastery of material. One way to properly utilize the independent work day is through “understanding checks”. An understanding check is a form which students fill out, that covers the material they’re expected to know. Understanding checks serve as an indicator of a students strength and weaknesses in understanding; while indicating what teachers need to expand upon or revisit.  Understanding checks enable students to efficiently study and prepare for quizzes and tests, while allowing teachers to improve upon their curriculum.
